The MFMR Research and Scholarly Activity Program trains resident physicians to be expert users and authors of medical evidence. In full compliance with the ACGME Family Medicine Program Requirements, the RSA Program has the following components:
Scholarly Activity Project
MFMR partners with the Family Physicians Inquiries Network (www.fpin.org) to support resident authorship of medical evidence. During their second-year, MFMR residents work with faculty mentors to complete Help Desk Answer articles for Evidence-Based Practice, the FPIN Journal. Their drafts-in-process are presented at Evidence Club, where other residents and faculty can learn from their work and also give them feedback prior to submission to Evidence-Based Practice.
Presentations
Resident physicians regularly present case conferences drawing on their experiences in the areas of pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, obstetrics and ambulatory care. Our inpatient family medicine service also presents interesting cases twice a month at our MFMR grand rounds. In their third year, resident physicians also perform one-hour presentations to the staff of Billings Clinic Hospital as well as telemedicine sites around the state as guest lecturers in the Billings Clinic Grand Rounds series.

Conferences
Every year, MFMR sends resident physicians to Family Medicine Residents and Students National Conference, as well as to the annual meetings of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the Montana Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, residents are encouraged to submit posters and papers for presentation at other state, regional, national and international meetings, and MFMR covers the expenses of residents whose work is selected for presentation.
Resident Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) Teaching Elective
Upper-level resident physicians have the opportunity to further hone their EBM skills through a two-week elective. They develop a personalized skills inventory, learn about effective precepting, co-precept their peers with our clinic preceptors, become the EBM consultant for the inpatient family medicine service, and present what they have learned at an EBM conference at the residency.
