Living in Montana has its perks! Many of our residents enjoy various outdoor activities during their "down time" from working. With so many opportunities nearby, it'll take at least all three years of residency to try them out--see what some of our residents have done this year!
The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness
The Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness contains the largest single expanse of land above 10,000 feet in elevation in the United States. Visitors spent 392,000 collective days here in 1983, making it the fourth most visited wilderness in America. The entire wilderness is a watershed for the Yellowstone, the longest undammed river left in the United States. It flows over 670 miles from its sources out of Yellowstone National Park and is the lifeblood of about one third of Montana and much of northern Wyoming.
The Beartooth highway is in Southern Montana and Northern Wyoming east of Yellowstone National Park. It's 64 miles long from Red Lodge, MT to Cooke City, MT. The seasonal road winds it's way through a huge plateau above 10,000 feet with alpine lakes, glaciar-carved cirques and fragile tundra. There are many side activities available in this area including hiking, fishing, hunting, and 4-wheeling. This highway is considered the most scenic road in America, and is about an hour from Billings.
Yellowstone National Park is notorious for it's geologic wonders such as "Old Faithful", the volcanically powered geyser that makes it's presense like clockwork several times a day. Yellowstone is also home to many wild buffalo, elk, wolves, and bears. Seeing these animals is simple in this abundant ecosystem either on foot, horseback, or from the convenience of your car. The park also offers hotels, miles and miles of hiking and camping, as well as food and gift shops.
Throughout our various hunting seasons and waiting for the fish to bite we also work in the hospitals and clinics in Billings. However, when the down time comes many run away to the hills to practice their gamesport. Here's a showcase of our finest.
